Nickel

Knowledge

Nickel has the power to impact many important processes including stomatal activity, photo assimilate movement, disease resistance and insect infestation, and overall plant growth and yield.

Quick Facts About Nickel

  • Nickel was added to list of essential plant nutrients late in the 20th century.
  • Plant absorb nickel as the divalent cation Ni+2
  • Nickel is required in exceedingly small amounts.
  • Ni concentration in most plant leaf material normally ranges from about 0 .1 to 5 ppm (in dry weight)
  • Nickel is readily mobile within plants and is preferentially translocated to developing seeds in some species.
  • Without the presence of Ni, urea conversion is impossible.

Role of Nickel in Plants

  • Nickel is important in plant N metabolism because it is a component of the urease enzyme.
  • Nickel is necessary for the conversion of urea to ammonium (NH4+) in plant tissue.
  • Nickel is required to prevent accumulation of toxic levels of urea in the plant tissue.
  • Essential nutrient for nitrogen fixing bacteria.
  • Function together with arginase in the utilization of seed protein in reserves during germination.

Nickel Deficiencies:

Deficiency Symptoms

  • Necrosis of leaf tips due to the accumulation of urea to toxic concentration.
  • Chlorosis of young leaves.
  • Reduced leaf size (mouse ears).
  • Less upright leaf growth.
  • Severe Ni deficiency results in plant stunting and abnormal growth pattern.
  • Tissue Ni concentrations greater than 10 ppm are considered toxic in sensitive crop species.
  • Tissue Ni concentrations greater than 50 ppm considered toxic in moderately crop species.

Factors Affecting Deficiencies

  • Factors reducing Ni uptake by plants include cool and/ or dry soil conditions.
  • Sandy soils with low CEC.
  • High soil concentrations of other metal cations such as Zn+2, Cu+2, Mn+2, Fe+2 and cobalt (Co+2) can inhibit uptake of Nickel.
  • High rates of nitrogen fertilization.
  • High soil levels of Magnesium (Mg), Calcium (Ca) and Phosphorus (P).
