Molybdenum
Knowledge
Molybdenum has the power to impact many important processes including stomatal activity, photo assimilate movement, disease resistance and insect infestation, and overall plant growth and yield.
Quick Facts About Molybdenum
- Molybdenum is essential for the process of symbiotic Nitrogen (N) fixation by Rhizobia bacteria in legume crops.
- Molybdenum is needed by the plant in the synthesis and activation of nitrate reductase enzyme which reduces nitrate to ammonium in the plant.
- Molybdenum can be mixed with NPK fertilizers applied as a soil or foliar application or used as a seed treatment.
- Form used by plants: MoO4+.
Role of Molybdenum in Plants
- Optimizes plant growth by aiding proper assimilation of Nitrogen.
- Aids in the formation of nodulation required for Nitrogen fixation in legumes.
- Converts nitrates (NO3 ) into amino acids and proteins within the plant.
- Involved in synthesis of ABA (abscisic acid).
- Important role in Phosphorus utilization.

Molybdenum Deficiencies:
Deficiency Symptoms
- The first symptoms of Molybdenum deficiency is shown as a Nitrogen deficiency, (yellow, yellow0green or orange mottling of leaves followed by curling of leaf margins) because Molybdenum is required for Nitrogen fixation by leguminous plants.
- Appears in older leaves first, and then in younger leaves until the growing point dies.
- Flowers wither or are suppressed, tissue has an abnormally low content of protein, total soluble Nitrogen and chlorophyll.
- Leaf blades distorted on brassica crops (whiptail).
Factors Affecting Deficiencies
- Soils below pH of 5.5 show deficiency.
- Soil low in Phosphorus will affect availability.
- Application of nutrients containing Sulphates and ammonium Nitrogen can negatively impact Molybdenum availability.
- Increase in Phosphorus will increase Molybdenum uptake.
- Availability of Molybdenum increases with soil pH.
- Soils derived from sands tend to be low in Molybdenum.
- All
- Cereal
- Canola
- Soybeans
