How Biostimulants Help with Early Season Cold and Moisture Stress

This spring, many growers are choosing to use a biostimulant to enhance nutrient uptake, nutrient use efficiency, tolerance to environmental stress, and/or enhance crop quality. According to a recent Stratus Ag Research Survey, representing 1,805 growers across Canada, 22.7% of growers used a biostimulant on their farm in 2023. The expectation is that this trend will continue to grow as more growers experience the benefits these new technologies provide.

One of first opportunities to apply a biostimulant to your crop is with a seed nutrient dressing. When choosing a nutrient seed dressing, one needs to understand the composition of the treatment and ensure it has a combination of:

  • Nutrition – Proper crop nutrition (specific by crop type) to drive rooting and early season vigour.
  • Biostimulants – Biostimulants protect the seed from early season seedling stress – specifically cold soil temperatures at seeding time.
